Cloudy glass usually is caused by the build-up of minerals that forms a film when glass is washed and allowed to dry by evaporation. It's very difficult to get into pieces like cruets, vases, jugs, ewers and especially bottles and decanters and they often develop a thin calcium residue on the inside. Pitchers, tumblers, stemware and the like that often have had a lot of use, also can develop a mineral film.
For years we searched for brushes that could get into those hard to reach areas to remove debris and deposits from our collection of delicate crackle glass, which includes over 700 pieces of vintage Blenko and other hand blown glass. We now have nearly 100 old decanters, and they're the toughest! We've had to be creative -the best until now was a hand made tool consisting of a bent chopstick with a piece of "scrubbie" glued on!
Sure, there are some long thin brushes out there, but usually they're bristle which actually can scratch soft soda glass! Worse, they typically are made on an exposed steel wire, and both the sides and the tip can scratch or gouge even hard lead glass and crystal.
We've tried some plastic "brushes" that use a shaped sponge. They were safe enough for the glass, but didn't have the strength or rigidity to do much. They just got sort of soggy and limp from absorbing water.
